If you are in the military and considering adoption, you may qualify for a program to help offset the costs of adoption. Military service members are eligible to have the costs associated with adoption reimbursed though the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. The adoption reimbursement covers adoptions for a child under the age of 18, stepparent adoptions, adoptions by a single person, infant adoptions, inter country adoption, and adoption of children with special needs. Service members can request a reimbursement of up to $2000 per adopted child or a maximum of $5000 per year. Reimbursement can be requested for reasonable and necessary expenses that are directly related to the adoption including adoption fees, placement fees, medical fees and legal fees.
To qualify for the reimbursement the service member must be serving on continuous active duty for at least 180 days, and the adoption must be finalized while the service member is on active duty. The reimbursement request must be submitted while the service member is on active duty and within two years of the date the adoption was finalized.
